Back to School

I hope everyone who is reading this had the most amazing summer!! Now it’s time to get “Back to School”.
Even though we are past our days of reading, writing and ‘rithmetic…I am quite sure I am not alone in what happens to me when September arrives, all I think about is SHOPPING! Now that we are “grown-ups” we get to trade in our shopping for “school supplies” to shopping for “cool supplies”

Plaids…. From dresses to Flannels! Mini…with pleats or without Skirts from Midi to Toppers, Sweaters, Cropped Tops, Metallic, Vegan Leather, Artsy, Classic Skinny Legs, Wide Legs…see a pattern here?

It’s pretty much everything goes! I have been out there shopping for the store for months, and really my tried and true motto of “wear what works for you” within the “trend”! There is something for everyone…all looks can be worn everyone!! Just make sure your proportions are right…for example, if you are going for a long oversized topper, make sure you pair it with a skinny bottom, and so on!

As to what colors are trending….purples, greys and neutrals! How exciting for us because we all have those basic colors already in our wardrobe, so we are ahead of the trend! It’s easy to be ready without spending a lot on the “new and trending”, pick up a scarf with the color purple and throw it on with that grey sweater or jacket already in your closet!

Wear the neutrals you already own with a new pair of winter white pants or jeans…done, you are on trend! The wonderful thing about the color palette this season is there is shade that looks good on every skin tone!

For my personal favorite color…Navy, there is a lot of navy offered this season, I love that, Navy is the new Black!

Think outside the box, the fun thing about navy is it looks great with purple, grey and winter white! So be your own kind of trend setter…mix and match the colors that make you happy! If you think you cannot pull off any of the new looks…just try us! We will take the “I can’t pull THAT off challenge”!

Happy Fall

Robin

Balance

It’s been a while…I’ve missed you!

We are now in our first full Fall season in Cherry Hill and thanks to the amazing community and the patience of our loyal customers in Newtown Square, we are off to an amazing start!

When this opportunity came my way, I was sure I would be able to maintain the balance I had finally found after 2 years between Mom, Shopkeep, Friend, Partner to my Partner… hahaha, you know that saying I love so much-woman plans, god laughs- well, so true, balance? Not so much! Time was no longer my own, so I had to prioritize, and guess what, there was no room for me in my own life!

You may think I am complaining, but I promise you, I am not! I love my life and wouldn’t have it any other way, I am doing what I love and still able to do it with joy and passion! I really do believe things happen the way they are supposed to and in the time they are supposed to, so I am trusting that I am exactly where I need to be at this very moment in time! With that being said, how does all this philosophical rationalization translate to real life or better yet, fashion?

Well, here’s the answer…when we come from a place of balance in our lives, life works!

When our closets have the right pieces, getting dressed becomes a pleasure and not a frustrating task we must do everyday. A new customer stopped by the store the other day just to tell us she had the best week of her life after her first shopping spree with us (now that may sound a bit dramatic, but she explained)…she loves clothes and looking good but hates shopping, so she really doesn’t do it that often, when she went home she took her purchases and laid them out on the bed, then she did something she said she always does, she made “dress-ipes” (you know like a recipe) she put outfits together, head to toe, took pictures of them, taped them in her closet, so when she goes to get dressed in the morning, there is no thought involved, she just wears her pictures! Isn’t that brilliant…

She said she never received so many compliments from people she has worked with for years…every time someone commented on her outfit, she felt better and more confident as the days went on! They say clothes make the man, so we can make that our own and say “dress-ipes” make the woman?!

With the holidays upon us, are you ready? Is your closet ready for those last minute invitations? I am sure you have your list and are making sure everyone else is taken care of…are you taking care of you? If you’re not, let me tell you, Mother Nature will…as I started this blog, I said there was not much room in my life for me, well guess what? I was working in the Cherry Hill store Sunday when the unexpected snow storm hit I couldn’t get home, so I checked into a hotel at 2:00 in the afternoon and had a whole afternoon, night and morning TO MYSELF!!! I got exactly what I needed!

So make yourself a priority in your own life…it will make you the best you that you can be and then you really can be there for everyone else!

The customer I mentioned above initially stopped by for 10 minutes to “check us out” she was on her way to take her son shopping…she called him and told him she would be there when she was done at the store….2 hours later, she was on her way, armed with a smile and an armful of bags to take care of her son!

Happy, Healthy Holidays..

Size matters?

Hi everyone…it’s been awhile, but I am back, with an opinion of course!

As we settle in to our second location, I am thinking about how our customers feel when they walk into both of our boutiques. This got me thinking about something that totally bothers me! This new trend of customers walking into stores and being told, “I don’t think we are for you” Really…. are business’s doing that well these days that they can not only refuse someone service but make them feel inferior because of their size?

We have grown up in the shadow of jutting hip bones and sunken cheeks of the likes of Twiggy, Cher, Kate Moss and the rise of the super model as celebrity, don’t get me wrong I really like and respect these women for what they have achieved. Yet out of this era came the new age of eating disorders, think there is a connection? HMMMMM…

The Long and Short of it

Most of you reading this know me, and those who choose to read on, will get to know me :)
If it’s on my mind it’s out of my mouth, or in this case, in my blogs! These blogs are nothing personal, just my opinions and musings on the state of our (fashion) world as seen through the eyes of a woman who has been helping other women achieve the best they can be through expressing their personal style!

With that being said, I would like to talk about something I feel very strongly about; the Capri pant! I just don’t get it, are they really short pants, or are they really long shorts? The one thing I do get, is that they flatter no one! It’s summer and I understand it is very hot, especially this summer, but you cannot tell me that the 8 inches between your ankle and calf keep you that much cooler than if you chose an ankle pant? Honestly, why would someone intentionally wear something that hit at the middle of their calf? [Read more...]

Cliches

I heard a saying once…Man Plans, God Laughs! Of course, I adapted it to (wo)man plans…
I have used this cliché many times in my life, yet I believe I am just starting to really understand the magnitude of those 4 little words!

Let me back up a few years and share with you what brought me to this AHA moment…
I had an idea about a new twist on a favorite past time, shopping; what if we offered current boutique clothing at discounted pricing in a fun, relaxed atmosphere with customer service being our number one priority, support our community through charity and art…blah, blah, blah
Ok, drew up a business plan, found space, connected with vendors, built a store and voila, Boutique Wearhouse was born! Less than 3 years later, we realized we were onto something, the community supported our concept as we have supported the community…we were actually offering something people wanted…a place where everyone knows your name (oops, i think that was Cheers), oh well, you know what i mean…friends, fashion and fun! The Right to “Bare” arms

I whole heartedly support our constitution’s second amendment, while also being 1 of the 90% who believe there should be a thorough background check on anyone interested in owning a firearm…

Did you really think I was going to jump on that political soapbox? Oooh nooo, let’s leave that to our elected officials, LOL!

What I do want to talk about is our fashion right to “bare” arms, from wrist to shoulder, show it ladies! Whether your arms resemble Michelle Obama or Barbara Bush- go for it!

I have been in this business a long time and I was asked what is the one body part women are most self conscious of, I would have bet the store on the answer being hips and thighs, yet experience has taught me the majority of women are self conscious about their arms! [Read more...]

You are what you see!

I was sitting down this morning to put the finishing touches on a blog about “shoulder shelter”, when
my mind kept returning to a dove commercial I saw being discussed on Good Morning America, and I
realized, this is a real issue that most women face and should be brought into the light, so….

I have been working with women of all ages and sizes for over 30 years now and the one thing we all
have in common is our self esteem when it comes to our looks! We have been shown over the years
what beauty is in fashion magazines, Hollywood, etc…what is beautiful? Well if we buy into that culture,
they have been telling us, it is a size 2, a glamorous look, wearing expensive designer clothing, right?! [Read more...]

Sad that there is a National Child Abuse Prevention Month….

No one can do everything, but everyone can do something.- unknown

The fact that we even need a month to try to prevent and stop child abuse shakes me to my very core! That is why we are hosting a fundraiser to support CASA, Court Appointed Special Advocates!  As parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents, friends, it is our responsibility to be the best advocates for our children, when due to circumstances, that is not possible, we must support a community that will do that for our children! We should not judge the reason these are children getting lost in our system, for they are often the result of societal problems as a result of divorce, job loss, teen pregnancy, etc. Whatever the reason these children are in desperate need of our help! It is our duty as human beings to support in these children in anyway, large or small! [Read more...]

When I am old… I shall wear purple.

If you have never read this poem, please stop what you are doing and take the time to read it, now!

Warning – When I Am an Old Woman I Shall Wear Purple

By Jenny Joseph

When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple
with a red hat that doesn’t go, and doesn’t suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
and satin candles, and say we’ve no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I am tired
and gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
and run my stick along the public railings [Read more...]

Jeans vs. Genes

JEANS VS. GENES

My favorite morning of the year….no more daylight savings time! The nights are lighter longer, the birds
start singing, the promise of rebirth! As I set my clocks ahead, I start thinking about the long winter we
are about to leave behind and I also start thinking about the weight I lost last summer…OMG, it’s back!
How did that happen? How did I let this happen? UGH, I have no willpower , I am weak, what is wrong
with me! No, I will not go down this path AGAIN! [Read more...]
